MOZOMEDIA MUSIC PODCAST – Ep 5

Episode no. 5 brings you the epic Sword and Laser rock song, new music from Karl Eifrig and Auricular Records, a scintillating SuBBrilliant News report, and much more.

We start with ‘Younger’ by The New Old Men, a sketch of two old friends sitting together on a train, surrounded by shimmering ambiances.

Next is the charming rustic calm of the almost entirely acoustic instrumental ‘Cansada’ by Kitchen Sink. You can also watch the video on YouTube.

This is followed by the epic rock of ‘The Sword and the Laser’ by The Clive Royal Project and The New Old Men. Clive Royal, inspired by the online science fiction and fantasy bookclub Sword and Laser, wrote his Sword and Laser song and then basically open-sourced it on his website – inviting others to download it, remix it, and add to it. So The New Old Men did just that, adding guitar, drum loops, and keyboards around Clive’s vocals to create their own version of this mini-epic.

Next is a solo piece by Karl Eifrig called ‘The Evening Bite’, an ambient instrumental that shifts through various beguiling sounds. Karl is also known as ‘Eddie P.’, the collaborator with J.J. Sonick in the bands The New Old Men and Kitchen Sink.

Then we stomp along with ‘Fine as Wine’ by the lo-fi indie rock band Pookie.

‘She Brings the Rain’ by Giligadi off the Fissures in the Faithful album follows – a cover of the mellow, jazzy song of the same title by the legendary krautrock band Can.

Then we pause for a News report from SuBBrilliant News, covering Iranian protesters interaction with Twitter, the United States use of torture (against metaphors), and more.

Next we hear the fiery instrumental ‘Holes in Your Paper Stomach’ off the album The Noise Under the Eyelid by The Cat’s Orchestra, which is the project of Ukrainian composer/performer Nicolay Sirov.

Then we hear the grooving intergalactic improv of Avjit in their saxophone-trombone-bass instrumental ‘Solar Sail’.

And we finish with the ambient instrumental ‘The Bowls’ which finds Charlie Naked exploring a variety of resonant sounds made with Tibetan singing bowls.

Karl Eifrig lives in Chicago, IL where he plays in the bands Lynyrd’s Innards and Mexican Cheerleader when he’s not inventing new ways to be punk. He also collaborates, under the name Eddie P., with J.J. Sonick (Josh Lawrence) in the Mozomedia bands The New Old Men and Kitchen Sink, and also played with that jerk Josh and the mysterious Madame Maenad in the early ’90’s band Pookie.

Jessica Christian from Virginia requested a song titled either “Dress Down Heroes” or “Heroes in Jeans” that would encourage faculty and staff at the school she works at to participate in “dress down” weeks. Staff can contribute $10 and get to dress casual for the week, and the money goes to Relay for Life, a cancer research charity. To craft this epic ballad, Karl enlisted Ryan Murphy on drums, Grant Sutton on bass, Sean Shipley on lead guitar and Josh Lawrence on brass keyboards/lyric tweaking.

Panchitah from LA, California submitted a custom song request for ‘a fun song to make me smile while I’m all borked and stuff. You know, “Dont worry be happy” style. Also, about how forgetful I am’. Karl says: ‘I may have missed the mark a little bit as far as the actual request goes, but I think I acheived a sort of Bobby-McFerrin-sings-Tom-Cruise’s-opinions-on-the-pharmaceutical-industry vibe, and hope this helps the executive producer feel less borked in general.’

J.J. Sonick (aka Josh Lawrence) lives in San Francisco, CA and collaborates long-distance with Eddie P. (aka Karl Eifrig) in the bands New Old Men and Kitchen Sink, as well as playing with Stompin’ Jim Hambone (Craig Higdon) in the moonshined-up High Country Low Lifes. In the early 90’s he played in the bands Pookie and Avijit.

He produces the monthly Mozomedia Music Podcast with the assistance of Craig Higdon, who plays the D.J. Harris, Tom Merritt, who brings the SubBrilliant News, and the works of many musicians and friends.

Sonick: “I don’t play any of the music on what I call cultivations – instead midi tracks are computer generated from various programs, and my main work is in arranging (choosing the virtual instruments and mix) and pruning and splicing (tweaking/deleting midi notes). Cultivations are also my way of cheating to make up for my deficiencies. Someday I hope to be able to play the stuff I’ve ‘grown’ via cultivation.”

These two na-er-do-wells from a lost valley in the Siskiyou mountains of… wait. Na-er-do-well haint really right. I mean, they na-er-really do bad nuther. I guess they’re just na’er dos.

Anyway, that’s all beside the matter. What’s the fore of the matter is that they make a kind of uncouth, lo-fi version of music called “Siskiyou Stomp.” They make that music with instruments like their voice, and some strings.

There’s a dog what runs the show by the name Walt. The other two go by Stompin’ Jim Hambone and Smilin’ Jim McGee.

They’re rough round the edges, and rough round the middle, and rough round the edges of the middle. And they drink. LOTS.

Masters of Poh is the duo of Vaara Ylhäälta and Mauno Salmi, who both studied for years under the legendary Finnish avant-garde composer Seppo Perälä. However, after Perälä insisted on months of re-takes of the recording of his re-interpretation of Wagner’s Ring Cycle (to be performed by Ylhäälta and Salmi on toy instruments), the two finally broke from their former mentor, and are now exploring fertile fields of proggy weirdness. They are sometimes joined by co-traveller Ismo Koivu.
